Jaipur: With 1,515 public charging stations installed as of Dec 2025, Rajasthan accounts for about 5% of the country’s 29,151 public charging stations.Karnataka leads with 6,096 stations, followed by Maharashtra with 4,166. Rajasthan, however, has a strategic role to play in developing intercity charging corridors, particularly along highways linking Jaipur with major cities and tourist and industrial destinations.Rajasthan is stepping up efforts to expand its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, seeking to bridge the gap between urban charging hubs and the long-distance routes.Recently, Rajasthan Renewable Energy Corporation has floated tenders for setting up about 350 charging stations in six cities and on highways.Gopal Sharma, an entrepreneur setting up charging stations, said, “The challenge is not simply adding charging points. They have to be commercially viable.”He said that public charging stations typically operate at only 1-5% utilisation, resulting in long payback periods for private operators.“This low utilisation is particularly significant in Rajasthan, where large distances between cities can make highway charging infrastructure essential even before demand reaches levels that ensure high commercial returns,” added Sharma.According to a report by Rubix Data Sciences, EV adoption remains uneven across the country. Three-wheelers have emerged as the strongest segment, with EV penetration of 60.77%, while penetration is 8.88% for two-wheelers and 5.70% for four-wheelers.The state govt has introduced a series of measures under Rajasthan Electric Vehicle Policy to make charging infrastructure more attractive to investors. These include a Rs 200-crore EV Promotion Fund for subsidies, SGST reimbursements, and purchase incentives.
