Ambala: An SHO was found dead with a bullet injury inside his room at the police station where he was posted in Haryana’s Ambala district on Saturday, with a senior police officer saying no one heard the fatal gunshot.Ambala SP Ajit Singh Shekhawat said the circumstances surrounding the death of Naggal police station SHO Karambir Singh were unclear and an investigation was underway. “There are chances he was cleaning his weapon when the incident took place due to accidental fire. There could be other reasons as well,” the SP said.Karambir, a sub-inspector, was found lying in a pool of blood by the police station cook, who had gone to check on him after he did not turn up for lunch. The cook had earlier asked Karambir when he would have food, and the SHO had said he would come around 3pm. When he did not arrive, the cook went to his room at about 3.30pm and found him lying in a pool of blood. “The room in which SI Karambir was resting was closed from inside and nobody heard the gunshot,” Shekhawat said.Karambir was taken to Ambala City Civil Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. “Doctors found an entry and exit wound from a bullet towards the left side of his chest,” the SP said.The SP said Karambir’s service weapon was recovered from the room. “In the morning, when SI Karambir talked to the police station’s munshi, he had talked about cleaning his weapon,” Shekhawat said. “We cannot rule out any possibility at this stage,” he added.The SP said nothing suspicious was found from the room and thorough checking was conducted. “He was doing his work very well. We can only speak with clarity about the incident after ascertaining and investigating all the facts.” “He was doing his work with honesty and hard work. It is a very sad moment for the police fraternity that we have lost a hardworking police officer,” Shekhawat added.The SP said Karambir’s family had been informed and reached the hospital. Further proceedings will be taken up after the postmortem on Sunday.
