BENGALURU: A midnight operation to track down a suspected illegal arms maker took a dramatic turn when the accused attacked a police constable with a weapon and later hurled chilli powder at the police team in Somasundarapalya.Acting on credible information, Bandepalya police inspector Manjunath RV deputed police sub-inspector Sachin Gowda and a team to trace Zeeshan, 34, a resident of Subashnagar, Electronics City, who was suspected to be involved in arms-making and supplying activities.Police also suspect him to be an associate of Adil Akmal, who was arrested in connection with the murder of Suhail under Madivala police jurisdiction on Aug 22 over enmity.The police team, comprising Sachin and constable Sandeep Kamble, located Zeeshan near Somasundarapalya Lake around 12.50 am on Thursday midnight. However, when he noticed the police, Zeeshan allegedly took out a weapon and attacked Kamble, causing injuries to his left hand.In an attempt to protect the injured constable and bring the situation under control, Sachin fired a warning shot into the air with his service pistol. Despite this, Zeeshan continued attacking the police and threw chilli powder at them.With the situation escalating, Sachin fired another round, hitting Zeeshan in his right leg. Zeeshan collapsed due to the injuries.Both Zeeshan and constable Kamble were immediately rushed to Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Trauma & Orthopedics Centre, Jayanagar, for treatment. According to police, both are out of danger.A scene-of-crime officer (SOCO) team inspected the spot, while the area was secured for further investigation. Senior police officials also visited the spot, hospital and police station following the incident.A case has been registered at Bandepalya police station under Sections 109 (attempt to murder), 132 (assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharging his duty), and 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) of the BNS and under the Arms Act.Suhail, 37, a medical store owner, was hacked to death by a gang with lethal weapons while he was riding on his Harley-Davidson bike along with his friend, heading from Madiwala towards Koramangala, around 9.45 pm.Madiwala police had arrested five persons in the case. The arrested allegedly confessed that the weapons were supplied to them by Zeeshan.
