Three arrested after noisy bikes lead to friction in Mumbai during procession

Mumbai: A minor objection by Parel residents to bikers allegedly riding without silencers and creating a loud noise led to an altercation that briefly triggered a riot-like situation in Parel on Wednesday night. The police arrested three persons in connection with the clash. The accused were identified as Rehan Masood Sayyad (19), Adil Khan Ahmed Khan (19) and Miraj Mohammad Firoz Rais (18). Police are searching for some more accused.Police said the exact trigger for the confrontation was still being established. According to a police official, the trouble began when participants returning from the Eid Milad-un-Nabi procession travelled through the area on bikes, cars and trucks. Following the incident, additional police personnel were deployed in Parel and Dadar as a precautionary measure.“Some of the bikers had modified their bike silencers, which created loud and disturbing noise for residents living along the road in Parel. A few residents objected to the noise and tried to stop some bikers, leading to a scuffle. Our police personnel, including officers deployed on bandobast duty, immediately intervened and prevented the situation from escalating,” the official said. The officer said the police managed to restore peace within minutes, but several claims and videos subsequently circulated on social media, posing another challenge for the police. The department immediately issued clarifications to counter the misinformation and prevent panic among citizens. The accused have also been booked for allegedly violating prohibitory orders issued by the police commissioner restricting unlawful assembly, besides the application of criminal sections.Joint commissioner of police (law and order) Manoj Sharma appealed to residents not to believe rumours or unverified social media posts. He said senior police officers had been deployed in the area and the situation was under control.
