Stroke patient undergoes advanced heart surgery at city hosp

Lucknow: A 51-year-old man with severe rheumatic mitral valve disease, pulmonary hypertension and a history of stroke recently underwent an endoscopic mitral valve replacement in a private hospital in Lucknow. The patient, Arif Mohammad, a resident of Malihabad, had been suffering from breathlessness, fatigue, palpitations and swelling in his legs. Doctors said the diseased mitral valve was severely damaged, affecting normal blood flow through the heart.Considering his medical history and overall condition, the medical team opted for a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure that enables valve replacement through small incisions between the ribs without opening the breastbone. The surgery was performed by Dr Vijayant Devenraj, senior director and head, cardiothoracic and vascular surgery, along with his team at the Max Super Speciality Hospital. The patient recovered without complications and was discharged on the fifth day after surgery.Dr Devenraj said the procedure requires precision and specialised expertise but results in less surgical trauma, reduced pain and faster recovery.
