Gurgaon: The proposed interchange at Rajiv Chowk is moving closer to execution. The tender for the project — aimed at easing one of the city’s busiest traffic bottlenecks — is likely to be invited by March 2027. The development was shared during a review meeting chaired by Haryana’s principal adviser (urban development) DS Dhesi on Wednesday.NHAI has proposed a dedicated two-lane left-turn flyover with paved shoulders for traffic travelling from Delhi towards Sohna Road.Similarly, a second-level three-lane right-turn flyover above the existing NH8 flyover has been proposed that will cater to traffic coming from Sohna to Delhi, bypassing the busy junction. The interchange is expected to separate through traffic from local movements and improve travel between Delhi and Sohna.NHAI officials said that the alignment for the interchange had been approved and the remaining issue involving department of telecommunications land was being resolved. The proposed redesign seeks to streamline traffic movement at Rajiv Chowk, where vehicles travelling between NH8, Sohna Road, Civil Lines and Subhash Chowk frequently witness bottlenecks due to multiple at-grade traffic conflict points.“The final DPR is under preparation, and once approved, we will invite tender for the project,” an NHAI official said.During the meeting, the condition and utilisation of the existing non-motorised transport (NMT) facility at Rajiv Chowk were also flagged. NHAI officials said the facility is currently not being used adequately and is also prone to waterlogging during the monsoon. It was decided that the facility would be closed from a safety perspective. The issue of pedestrian movement was separately taken up at the meeting, with civic agencies having been directed to improve footpaths and make pedestrian movement safer and more continuous across the city.Dhesi directed agencies to comprehensively develop and repair footpaths within a 500-metre radius of the two metro stations in Sector 29 including Millennium City Centre and Iffco Chowk.HSVP administrator Vaishali Singh said the design was being prepared in consultation with Raahgiri Foundation.Dhesi also directed DCP (traffic) to be involved in finalising the design so that pedestrian movement, crossings and traffic safety are considered together.GMDA has also engaged a consultant for developing a footpath along Rajiv Chowk-Sadar bazaar corridor. The agencies have been asked to finalise their respective concept plans within a month. The committee also discussed the utilisation of 436 bigha of land restored to MCG following the directions of Supreme Court. The land, located on both sides of Gurgaon-Faridabad Road and falling in Natural Conservation Zone, is to be utilised for increasing the city’s green cover. In the meeting, MCG commissioner Pradeep Dahiya said that 32,740 metric tonnes of C&D waste had been lifted from various parts of the city during the past month. “We are also formulating standard operating procedures for more effective management of C&D waste in the city,” Dahiya said.“All agencies have been directed to ensure that debris was removed from green belts under their respective jurisdictions and that these areas were restored and made functional. Strict action against those involved in illegal dumping of debris at various places, particularly during night hours to be taken,” Dhesi said.
