Varanasi: A complaint has been submitted against former Congress president and Rajya Sabha MP Sonia Gandhi, alleging disrespect to the national song Vande Mataram during an Independence Day programme at the Congress headquarters in Delhi. However, no FIR has been registered so far.The complaint was filed on Sunday at the office of the Varanasi Police Commissioner by Nageshwar Mishra, a resident of Tilmapur under the Sarnath police station area and a former village head. Mishra has demanded that a case be registered against Sonia under relevant legal provisions.In his complaint, Mishra alleged that during the Independence Day programme held at the Congress headquarters in Delhi, an attempt was made to stop Vande Mataram midway. He claimed Sonia’s actions hurt his national sentiments.Mishra has also stated that video footage will be provided as evidence to support his allegations. A copy of the complaint has also been submitted to Sarnath police station.The complainant said matters related to the national song and the honour of the nation should not be viewed through a political lens but should be handled with sensitivity.Police are expected to examine the complaint and review the available video evidence before taking a call on registering an FIR.
