Hyderabad: Two separate incidents of senior students allegedly attacking juniors at residential educational institutions in Telangana have come to light on Monday. In one case in Vikarabad district, a Class 8 was allegedly branded with a hot pan after asking for an extra chapati, while in another incident in Khammam district, a group of senior students allegedly assaulted Class 10 students following a kabaddi match. The first incident was reported from the Boys’ Social Welfare Residential School in Tandur, Vikarabad district. The eighth-class student, Saibalaji, was having lunch when he reportedly asked for an additional chapati. Some ninth-class students allegedly questioned why he should be given an extra chapati and attacked him with a pan, leaving burn marks on his body. After learning about the incident, some of the students’ parents reached the institution and questioned the staff. However, Ashok, the school principal, said that Saibalaji had been frequently getting into arguments with other students. According to the principal, the student had earlier given a written undertaking that he would not get involved in such quarrels. In the second incident, tension erupted at the Tribal Boys’ Residential Junior College at Gandhinagar in Karepalli mandal of Khammam district during Independence Day celebrations. The institution had organised sports competitions as part of the celebrations, including a kabaddi match involving students from different classes.According to the police, Class 10 students defeated Intermediate first-year students in the kabaddi match. Some Intermediate second-year students, apparently upset over the result, allegedly attacked the Class 10 students after the game.Fearing further assault, the Class 10 students fled the campus and took shelter at a nearby railway station, while about 50 students allegedly involved in the attack left the hostel and went home, according to the police. The parents of the affected students later reached the institution and expressed anger over the incident, questioning how such a large group of students could be involved in an attack without intervention by staff.Police also reached the institution and spoke to the Class 10 students at the railway station to ascertain what had happened. “We have counselled the students involved in the incident, and the college principal said an inquiry would be conducted and that students found responsible for the assault would be sent home”, Karepalli SI Gopi said.
