Amritsar: Security has been stepped up across Punjab’s border districts ahead of Independence Day, with heightened surveillance along the International Border with Pakistan amid the threat of cross-border drone intrusions and attempts to disrupt peace.Security agencies are keeping a close watch on possible drone drops of arms, ammunition, explosives and narcotics. The BSF has intensified surveillance along vulnerable stretches, while police and intelligence networks have been activated to track suspicious movement.Amritsar commissioner of police Harmanbir Singh Gill, who is also DIG, border range, said two VIPs would visit Pathankot and Gurdaspur for separate Independence Day functions. Adequate police and paramilitary deployment has been made for their security and the smooth conduct of the celebrations, he said.In Amritsar, more than 30 gazetted officers and over 1,000 police personnel have been deployed for Independence Day duties. A full-dress rehearsal was held at Guru Nanak Stadium on Thursday, which deputy commissioner Dalwinderjit Singh also inspected.Security has been strengthened in Pathankot, Gurdaspur and Amritsar, with police and district administrations coordinating surveillance of sensitive locations and suspicious persons and vehicles. Village Defence Committees in border villages have also been asked to remain alert and immediately report unusual activity to police.
