Gurgaon: A 19-year-old woman was found hanging at her in-laws’ house in Kol village, Nuh. Her family alleged she was harassed over dowry, beaten and burned before being hanged, claiming that there were burn marks on her face and injury marks on her body.The victim, Fiza Tarjuma, got married to Jamshed last year. Her family said that dowry demands for a vehicle and money had continued since the marriage, despite giving them gifts and other items. “We would give them some money at times, which would calm things down for 5-10 days, but then the harassment would continue,” a family member said. Fiza’s family said they had not approached police earlier as the matter was being settled by community elders.They said the harassment got worse after Fiza gave birth to a daughter three to four months ago. “Four days ago, my father had gone there and even after explaining to them and getting a settlement done, still yesterday they first beat her, then burned her, and after that they hanged her,” the family member alleged.Fiza’s grandfather, Haji Yakub, said the family reached her in-laws’ house after receiving information about the incident and found her body hanging from a noose.The allegations of assault, burning and murder are yet to be established and will be subject to the post-mortem examination and police investigation, a police officer said. “A case has been registered against four people, including Fiza’s husband,” the officer added.Police said further action would be taken on the basis of the post-mortem report and evidence collected during the investigation. The post-mortem report is awaited.
