Surat: A nationwide cyberfraud network that caused losses of Rs 125 crore to 5,613 people has been busted by Surat cybercrime police, who have arrested four more accused involved in distributing malicious APK files used by cybercrooks to target victims.The arrests came after police found that 31,174 people had downloaded the APK files, of whom 5,613 collectively lost Rs 125 crore through 1,06,643 debit transactions.The four accused were arrested from a hotel in Patna, where Surat cybercrime officers caught them sleeping during a late-night raid. They allegedly bought APK files from the developer and supplied them to cyberfraudsters for distribution across the country.The latest arrests follow the arrest last month of APK developer Rohit Sakya, who allegedly created and supplied the files to cybercrooks. Sakya came under the scanner after a Surat resident lost Rs 5 lakh in a cyberfraud.Additional commissioner of police (Crime) Dr Karanraj Vaghela said, “We arrested APK file developer Rohit Sakya last month after a Surat resident lost Rs 5 lakh in a cyberfraud. Sakya was supplying the files to cybercrooks. We have now arrested four accused from a Patna hotel who were buyers and distributors of these APK files.”Those arrested have been identified as Jahrul Ansari alias Chand (35), Rajankumar Soni (19), Adityaraj (19) and Samir Ansari alias Shaktiman (28).During the investigation, the cybercrime team travelled to Jamtara and Deoghar in Jharkhand while tracking Ansari, who was constantly changing locations. The team followed him from Jamtara to Deoghar, but he left for Bihar before the police could reach him. Investigators eventually traced him to Patna, where they raided a hotel and caught Ansari and three others asleep.Police found that the accused had been purchasing APK files from developers and supplying them to cyberfraudsters. Developers charged between Rs 8,000 and Rs 70,000 for the APK files, depending on the requirements of the buyers.
