Jaipur: Residents of Panch Neem in Ramganj heaved a sigh of relief Saturday as preparations began to demolish a three-storey house that developed deep cracks three days ago, triggering fears of a collapse.

The Jaipur Municipal Corporation issued owner Rehana Sultan a 24-hour notice to demolish the building. She decided to bring it down herself, with the demolition estimated to cost Rs 4 lakh. Support beams have been installed on the ground floor, and a private company is inspecting the structure. Demolition is expected to begin on Sunday. Around 40 residents have been evacuated as a precaution, while some tenants moved to shelters and others stayed with relatives. “Ever since the cracks appeared, there has been a sense of fear across the neighbourhood. We were worried that even a small section could collapse and cause casualties. But the prompt action by the civic body and owner has given us some relief,” said resident Mohammad Irfan. Zahid Khan, who lives next door, said the children in the area first noticed the cracks Thursday. “They informed us and we called the police. Within about 30 minutes, the police, NDRF team and municipal officials reached the spot,” he said. “Now that demolition work is starting, we feel relieved. It may take four to five days, but at least the danger will be removed,” Khan said. Nearby residents were also asked to vacate their homes temporarily.
