Ferozepur: Police, with the help of a cow vigilante group, on Monday busted an illegal slaughterhouse being run under the guise of a knacker’s yard in the Basti Nizamdin area of Ferozepur. The cops recovered a large quantity of beef, along with deep-fat fryers, and rescued nine cows and some calves.Police have sent the suspected beef sample for forensic testing. Cow protection activist Harbhajan Singh and former Ferozepur municipal councillor Beant Singh alleged that when they tried to visit the suspected illegal slaughterhouse after receiving information about it, armed men present at the site stopped them from entering.“We conducted a recee of the area and informed the police on Sunday. When the police team reached the spot and checked, they found slaughtered and live cows and calves in many houses,” Harbhajan alleged.He alleged that some men at the knacker’s yard tried to attack them with sharp-edged weapons. He alleged that the beef was supplied to many cities, including Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Bathinda.DSP Sukhwinder Singh, who reached the spot on receiving the information, said that nine cows had been rescued. “A team of veterinary doctors is being called, and samples of beef are being sent to the lab for testing. The names of four to five people have come to fore in the initial investigation. We will take action against those who slaughtered cows and sold beef.
