Mohali: Mohali police have arrested two persons, including a woman, for allegedly targeting unsuspecting motorists by seeking lifts at night and later robbing them. The accused, identified as Mohit Sharma and Tabasum, were arrested by Dhakoli police while investigating two robbery cases. Police have recovered the looted cash, an Activa scooter and another two-wheeler from their possession.SHO (Dhakoli) inspector Satnam Singh said the accused had adopted a calculated modus operandi to trap victims. During late-night hours, the woman would stand by roadsides pretending to be stranded and seek lifts from passing motorists. Once a victim stopped, her accomplice, Mohit Sharma, would join in and the duo would allegedly rob the person of cash and valuables before fleeing.Police said the pair mainly targeted people travelling alone at night, taking advantage of deserted stretches of road. The accused allegedly committed at least two such robberies in the Dhakoli area before being tracked down and arrested.Preliminary investigation revealed that Mohit Sharma and Tabasum had been living together for the past 15 to 20 days. After committing the crimes, they allegedly planned to flee to their native district to evade arrest.During interrogation, police also found that the accused had allegedly filled fuel at a petrol pump on July 11 and driven away without making payment. That incident has now been added to the investigation.Investigators have also identified another youth who was reportedly in contact with the accused. Police are verifying his role to ascertain whether he was involved in the robberies or provided logistical support.Officials said both accused are educated, and investigators are probing whether they were involved in similar crimes in other areas. Police believe further disclosures are likely during interrogation and have not ruled out the possibility of additional victims coming forward.
