Pune: A private company employee from Hadapsar ended up losing Rs 4.81 lakh to cybercrooks in a bid to sell his study table between July 7 and 8.The 41-year-old filed an online complaint the next day. After preliminary investigations, the Hadapsar police registered a case on Thursday.An officer from the Hadapsar police said the complainant had posted an online advertisement to sell his study table. On July 7, he received a call from an unknown number. The caller agreed to buy the table for Rs 1,800.“The caller then told the complainant that he would make the payment online. He first transferred Re 1 and later falsely claimed that he had transferred Rs 1,800,” the officer said.When the complainant did not receive the money, he again contacted the caller, who then shared a QR code and instructed him to transfer Rs 90,000, assuring him that the amount would be returned immediately. Believing him, the complainant transferred the money.“When the complainant did not get his money back, he called the person again and asked him to return the money and cancel the deal,” the officer said.On July 8, another person contacted the complainant and assured him that the money would be refunded. He obtained the complainant’s bank details and persuaded him to transfer more money, citing several reasons. In all, the complainant transferred Rs 4.81 lakh to the fraudsters.“We have registered a case and sought details of the transactions from the complainant’s bank,” the officer said.
