Chennai: Three days after TOI reported on the pitiable condition of the playground at Govt Ambedkar Higher Secondary School, which was littered with garbage, including empty liquor bottles, construction debris, and wet and dry waste, the Greater Chennai Corporation cleared the premises by Thursday.The school, located on Gandhi Irwin Road, adjoining the Buckingham Canal, falls within school education minister Rajmohan’s constituency. Following the article, the school education department, along with GCC officials had removed the garbage from the spot on Wednesday and Thursday.“Battery-operated vehicles were deployed and all garbage was cleared. Sanitary workers from the zones have been asked to keep an eye on the illegal dumping of waste in the school. The GCC has also instructed the public works department to set up CCTV cameras to identify and nab the culprits,” P Banukumar, superintending engineer (solid waste management), said.Chennai chief education officer M Kabir was unavailable for comments. Staff from minister Rajmohan’s office said that TVK cadres were also sent for assistance. “The school head has been asked to submit a request for a new school gate, which will be built at the earliest,” an official from the CEO’s office said.
