Silchar: More than 50 rare coins linked to the historic Dimasa Kingdom have been recovered in Assam‘s Dima Hasao district, in a find officials say is around 400 years old and could shed new light on the region’s medieval past.Announcing the recovery, Debolal Gorlosa, chief executive member of the Dima Hasao Autonomous Council, said the coins were voluntarily handed over by village historians, community elders and local residents who preserved them across generations. The initiative was carried out with guidance and support from the Assam archaeology department.Describing the discovery as a major milestone, Gorlosa said the coins would help document the history, culture and identity of the Dimasa people.Officials from the Assam archaeology department confirmed the antiquity of the cache, dating the coins to roughly four centuries ago.Preliminary examination found that several coins bear the names of Dimasa kings from different periods, while others feature ancient Dimasa scripts. Experts say the inscriptions could help decode historical records, trace royal lineages, study the evolution of the Dimasa language and better understand the medieval kingdom’s economy.Gorlosa appealed to the global Dimasa diaspora and local residents to come forward with similar artefacts.Gorlosa stated that these coins used during the time of the Dimasa kings are an invaluable part of their heritage. He requested anyone with such coins to come forward and extend their support to the autonomous council and the archaeology department so that, together, they can conduct deeper research and uncover more chapters of their history.He also urged collective action to protect the community’s cultural legacy for future generations and thanked the Assam archaeology department for its technical support in documenting the finds.
