Dibrugarh: Two alleged members of a fake Indian currency notes (FICN) racket were shot in their legs in a police encounter in Lakhimpur district early on Friday while assisting in a recovery operation.The injured, identified as Matibur Rahman and Muksabul Alom, were admitted to Lakhimpur Medical College and Hospital and are undergoing treatment under tight security.Lakhimpur SSP Gunendra Deka said the duo were among 10 people arrested by Lakhimpur Police on July 7. “During interrogation, Rahman and Alom revealed that they hid a substantial quantity of fake currency notes at a hideout. Based on this information, our team took them to recover the stash,” Deka added.Police took them to the Naharbari area under Doolahat to locate the consignment. “As soon as they got down from the police vehicle, both of them pushed and assaulted our personnel and attempted to flee,” Deka said.He said Laluk Police Station OC Simanta Pathak fired a warning shot and ordered them to stop. “Despite the warning, they continued running. Left with no option, our team fired at their legs to prevent their escape,” Deka added.Police said an investigation continues to identify other suspects and trace the source of the fake notes.
