Bannerghatta Road work in Bengaluru only restoration: Civic chief

Bengaluru: Amid viral posts claiming that Bannerghatta Road is being asphalted, the Bengaluru South City Corporation has clarified that the ongoing work is limited to restoration and not full-scale relaying. The clarification comes as commuters have been raising concerns over the poor condition of the stretch, which deteriorated following multiple civic and utility works, including those by Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board and ongoing metro construction along the corridor.Ramesh KN, commissioner, said only a 1.5-km stretch near the IIMB area is currently being taken up for restoration. “We are not asphalting the entire stretch; this is only restoration of a portion that was cut for BWSSB works. Full asphalting is a separate, large-scale process for which tenders will be floated. We are also in the process of arranging funds to take it up and make it a proper, high-quality road,” he said. The stretch has been under strain due to continuous digging for underground utilities and the construction of the Pink Line under Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd, leading to uneven surfaces, potholes and traffic bottlenecks. Recently, TOI highlighted how commuters continue to face daily challenges navigating the corridor. While the ongoing restoration is expected to provide temporary relief, officials indicated that a comprehensive asphalting plan will take more time, as it involves coordination between multiple agencies and budget allocations. For now, commuters along Bannerghatta Road may have to wait longer for a smoother, fully relaid stretch even as piecemeal restoration continues. |
