Kolkata: Members of the Posta Bazaar Merchants’ Association took out a silent rally on Tuesday afternoon, alleging that the police had failed to arrest all those involved in last week’s assault on the association’s general secretary, Biswanath Agarwala (73).The rally comes days after Jorabagan Police arrested four people, including the main accused, in connection with the attack.Posta Market, one of Asia’s largest wholesale markets, had shut down on Thursday following the assault on Agarwala. According to the police complaint, Agarwala was heckled and assaulted by a group of people who entered his office shortly before a meeting of the association was to be held. The attackers accused Agarwala of having political links with the former Trinamool govt. The association has for several years organised the Jagaddhatri Puja at Posta, which used to be inaugurated by former CM Mamata Banerjee. On Friday, traders at the market had called off the strike after cops arrested four persons accused of the assault.Carrying placards and walking silently through the market area, traders demanded the arrest of everyone seen in the CCTV footage of the incident.“The police were proactive and arrested four people. But we had given them CCTV footage which shows more people were involved in the incident. Why have those people not been arrested till now?” Agarwala said after the rally.“We are business people and require security and safety to carry out our business. We always work in tandem with whoever is in office in the state. We request our chief minister to ensure safety and security for traders,” he added.
