West Ahmedabad is burglars’ hunting ground, East is pickpockets’ paradise

Ashish.ChauhanAhmedabad: Thieves and chain-snatchers strike more often in the posher precincts of West Ahmedabad than in East, police records show. East Ahmedabad, however, is the preferred hunting ground for pickpockets and bag-dippers, the records indicate.The police dataset groups theft and burglary/house break-ins under the category “Property Theft & Burglary”. Across East and West, the category accounts for 452 cases — 316 in West and 136 in East.West, therefore, makes up 70% of all reported theft and burglary/break-in cases.The difference is also visible in street crime. West recorded 76 chain/mobile-snatching cases, compared with 46 in East.As for pickpocketing and bag-dipping cases, East logged 15 cases and West, only three.Overall, the three categories — theft/burglary, snatching, and pickpocketing/bag-dipping — accounted for 395 cases in West and 197 in East.In West, theft and house break-ins are dominant crimesChandkheda police station recorded 26 theft/burglary cases, the highest in West. Sola High Court police station logged 20 and Vastrapur, 15.Sabarmati and Sarkhej recorded 12 cases each, while Bodakdev had 11, and Vejalpur and Ranip had 10 each.In East, Narol is most vulnerableEast recorded 136 theft/burglary cases.Narol recorded 19 theft/burglary cases, the highest in East. Ramol and Odhav followed with 14 each, while Vatva recorded 12.Amraiwadi, Danilimda, Isanpur, Maninagar, and Naroda recorded nine cases each.Snatching adds to West’s property-crime burdenAmong West’s police stations, Chandkheda recorded 15 snatching cases, the highest in the zone. Vastrapur and Vadaj recorded four each.In East, Narol and Naroda recorded six snatching cases each. Ramol, Odhav, Maninagar, and Shaherkotda recorded four each.Pickpocketing concentrated around KagdapithPolice records show that Kagdapith recorded nine pickpocketing/bag-dipping cases. Maninagar and Shaherkotda recorded two each, while Isanpur and Naroda recorded one each.West had just three such cases — two at Vadaj and one at Ghatlodia.West’s loss higher; East’s per-case figure largerThe amount lost to crimes recorded in the dataset is approximately Rs 9.9 crore across East and West.West accounts for Rs 6.1 crore, while East accounts for Rs 3.8 crore.However, the average reported amount lost per case is higher in East.
