Ahmedabad: The civic body said it had fixed 39 of Ahmedabad’s 147 chronic flooding sites before the monsoon. Thursday’s rain told a different story. After the city received nearly 4 inches of rain in 10 hours, around 90% of those locations flooded again. Thaltej and Bodakdev saw water return to every site, while several other locations that the civic body had claimed to have fixed also saw waterlogging.The city recorded an average rainfall of 95.90mm between 6am and 4pm., leaving commuters and residents struggling through waterlogged areas.

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) had identified 147 waterlogging sites during the 2025 monsoon. Before this year’s rains, it claimed to have fixed 39 of them — 34 in western Ahmedabad — by laying new stormwater pipelines, connecting catchpits, and clearing drainage networks.Gota accounted for the highest number of sites removed from the list at 11, followed by Thaltej with nine, and Chandlodia and Bodakdev with four each.

Thursday’s rain, however, flooded all the sites that the civic body had claimed to have fixed in Thaltej and Bodakdev. Water also accumulated at several other western Ahmedabad locations that had undergone drainage work.The affected sites included Lady Lake in Bodakdev, New York Tower in Thaltej, Kesar Tea Stall, the Kalash Vihar-Ghuma Lake Road stretch, Shenbai Nagar, the area near Intas on SG Highway, Helmet Circle, govt quarters in Bodakdev, Atithi Hotel, Surdhara Circle, Jalsa Party Plot, Silver Casa, and the Bopal Lake-Canal Road stretch.Ahmedabad’s waterlogging list has grown despite repeated civic works. AMC had identified 125 vulnerable sites before the 2024 monsoon, but the number rose to 147 during the 2025 season. The corporation then surveyed the 147 sites to record the depth of accumulated water and the time needed to drain it. During the 2025 monsoon, water took more than five hours to recede at over 10 locations. These included two sites in Bopal-Ghuma in Thaltej ward, two in Gota and one in Bodakdev. In eastern Ahmedabad, water remained for more than five hours at one site in Naroda, three in Saraspur-Rakhial and one in Bapunagar.Thursday’s 95.90mm average rainfall put those claims under scrutiny, as water returned to around 90% of the supposedly fixed sites.Dead standby pumps leave Dharnidhar, Manekbaug waterloggedAnnual monsoon waterlogging struck Paldi’s Manekbaug and Dharnidhar Bridge areas again on Thursday, exposing the civic body’s negligence. Despite pre-monsoon plans to deploy two standby pumps beneath Dharnidhar Bridge to drain rainwater into Malav Talav, both pumps failed to operate during Thursday’s downpour. Unmaintained and completely out of service, the equipment sat idle, leaving the area severely flooded past 5pm.
