Amritsar: The Amritsar commissionerate police on Tuesday claimed to have busted six illegal arms supply networks and arrested eight persons with 13 illegal pistols and 23 cartridges.Harmanbir Singh Gill, commissioner of police, Amritsar, told reporters that the preliminary investigation revealed the accused were in contact with foreign-based smugglers and were procuring illegal weapons for further distribution and use in criminal activities.The investigations also established links between the arrested accused and other persons allegedly involved in the illegal arms supply network, the CP said, adding that investigators are now probing the wider network to identify the weapons’ source and those involved in their distribution.Separate FIRs have been registered against the arrested accused persons at the Chheharta, Gate Hakima, Sultanwind and D-Division police stations in Amritsar.Police said further investigation is underway to establish the network’s complete backward and forward linkages, identify other involved persons, and trace the flow of illegal weapons into the city.
