Pune: A 28-year-old man preparing for Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) examinations was found hanging at his rented flat in Shaniwar Peth on Wednesday morning.Senior inspector Navnath Jagtap of the Vishrambaug police said, “We have identified the deceased as Prathamesh Deshmukh, a resident of Khasapuri village in Dharashiv district’s Paranda tehsil. A note, purportedly written by Deshmukh, found from his room indicates that he took the extreme step because of financial distress.”He said, “The note stated that he had borrowed Rs 2.5 lakh for his own expenses. It also had the names of people from whom he borrowed money. We are probing why he had to borrow money.”Deputy commissioner of police (Zone I) Krushikesh Rawale told TOI, “Preliminary investigation revealed that Deshmukh was going through a financial crisis. We are checking all aspects and legal action will be taken accordingly.”Senior inspector Jagtap said Deshmukh had been living in Pune for the past two to three years and preparing for competitive examinations. He was staying in a one-BHK flat on the third floor of a building with other students for the past eight months, he said.Deshmukh’s roommates told police that he had returned to the flat around 11pm on Tuesday. “On waking up around 7am, the roommates saw the door of Deshmukh’s room ajar. They found him hanging from a ceiling hook with a bedsheet and raised an alarm,” Jagtap said.Deshmukh’s father died a few years ago, and his mother lives alone in Khasapuri. All his four sisters are married. “His relatives in Pune visited the police station and said he belonged to a financially poor family,” Jagtap said.Deshmukh had been preparing for civil services examinations and was planning to return to his village because he could not clear the preliminary examination, he said.Prashant Kapse, brother-in-law of Deshmukh, reached the spot after getting information about the incident. The autopsy of his body was conducted at Sassoon General Hospital in afternoon, police said, adding that the exact cause of the death would be established after medical and forensic examinations.Police said Deshmukh’s roommates said he used to leave the flat in the morning and return late at night and hardly interacted with them.
