— Attachment Content: 1_arrested_in_Silchar_gangrape_case.docx —1 arrested in Silchar gangrape case; hunt on for othersSilchar: One person has been arrested in connection with the alleged gangrape of a young woman on the Ramnagar bypass road here, while police have launched a manhunt to nab the remaining accused, officials said on Tuesday.According to the survivor’s statement, the incident occurred on the night of February 19 when she and her fiancé were travelling in his car along the Silchar bypass. The couple had stopped near the Chengkoorie Road area after her fiancé briefly stepped out of the vehicle.At that point, a group of youths allegedly arrived in another vehicle, blocked their path and forcibly dragged the fiancé to a short distance away, restraining him. The woman alleged that the attackers then sexually assaulted her one after another. She further claimed that no one was present nearby to intervene.Based on her complaint, Silchar Sadar police registered a case (No. 177/2026) under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including provisions related to gangrape, criminal conspiracy, criminal intimidation, assault on a woman and dacoity.Cachar senior superintendent of police Partha Pratim Das on Tuesday said one accused has been taken into custody and efforts are on to arrest the remaining culprits. “The survivor’s medical examination has been conducted and the report is awaited. Investigation is progressing on multiple fronts,” he said.Police sources said the woman also alleged that the accused extorted Rs 10,000 from the couple. Investigators are probing the extortion angle alongside the primary charges.Police are also searching for the vehicle allegedly used by the accused during the crime.The SSP urged the public to refrain from circulating unverified information about the case on social media, stating that misinformation could hamper the investigation. – bbg.
