Varanasi: Under their ongoing ‘Operation Shuddhi’, a joint team of Robertsganj police and SOG in Sonbhadra district arrested two members of an interstate ganja smuggling racket on Monday.The two arrested accused were Bires (45) and Govind (25) of Budaun district.Sonbhadra SP Abhishek Verma said that a total of 220 kg of ganja being transported from Odisha to Delhi in a truck was seized. The contraband is valued at about Rs 1.10 crore, while the total seizure, including a six-wheeler truck, two mobile phones and cash Rs 4,000 cash, is estimated to be Rs 1.20 crore.Acting on a tip-off, the joint team of police was checking suspicious vehicles near Genguar area, when they were alerted about the movement of ganja smugglers. They rushed to a bridge before Hinduari Trijunction, where the truck of smugglers was parked. Seeing the cops, two occupants-Govind and Bires- tried to flee but were caught.During search, the cops seized seven sacks of ganja from the truck. A case was registered at Robertsganj police station under Sections of the NDPS Act.Verma said, “The seizure is a major strike against organised drug trafficking, and further action will target every link in the Odisha-Delhi supply chain.” Investigators are examining the seized phones to identify financiers, handlers and local contacts involved.
