Silchar: Police on Wednesday arrested two more persons in connection with the alleged rape and murder of a Class 10 student in Assam‘s Hailakandi district, taking the total number of arrests in the case to five.Addressing the media, SP (Hailakandi) Amitabh Sinha said the latest arrests were made after interrogation of the earlier accused, with investigators corroborating their disclosures through forensic findings, digital evidence and other technical inputs.According to the police, the investigation has revealed that the minor girl was in contact with two of the accused. Investigators believe an interpersonal dispute arising out of their separate association with the victim allegedly culminated in the crime. Police clarified that this forms part of the prosecution’s case based on the investigation conducted so far.Investigators alleged that on the night of Aug 1, the accused lured the girl to her residence, sexually assaulted her and later murdered her. Police said kitchen implements found inside the house were allegedly used in the killing. Forensic evidence and material recovered from the crime scene are being relied upon to establish the sequence of events.Sinha said investigators now believe all five arrested persons were directly involved and that the probe has reached an advanced stage. A charge sheet will be filed after completion of the remaining legal formalities and collection of supporting evidence, he added.The case was registered under relevant provisions of the BNS and the Pocso Act and is being investigated by a Special Investigation Team headed by the additional superintendent of police (crime).
