Guwahati: A truck driver, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, got into a scuffle outside BJP MLA Ritu Baran Sarmah’s office in Sonitpur district on Sunday. The accused has been arrested.Two home guards were injured in the scuffle.The incident occurred outside MLA’s office after the truck driver allegedly rammed a vehicle belonging to party workers, police said. The accident triggered a confrontation that escalated into a scuffle.“The truck driver is receiving treatment, and a case has been registered against him. He will be produced before a court,” Sonitpur SSP Barun Purkayastha said.Sarmah, MLA from Barchalla, said there were no casualties because party workers were inside the office when the accident happened.“We were concerned that the situation could escalate, so we asked police to take the driver to the police station and handle the matter there. Our party members were asking him to cooperate with the police. However, at one point, the man took out a dagger and started behaving aggressively. Our party members and some of the people present tried to intervene. The police present at the spot took care of the situation,” he said.Sarmah added that two home guards were injured in the scuffle, with one hurting his finger.“The police were initially handling the situation. Later, when members of the public caught him, they assaulted him for a few minutes. One of the constables threw sand towards his face, which momentarily distracted him. The police and others were then able to catch and restrain him,” he added.
