Noida: A case of rash driving was registered after a 14-year-old boy allegedly rear-ended a sedan carrying a family with a 13-month-old child in Sector 119 on Wednesday. Police said the boy, a resident of Sector 122, had taken out his family’s Grand Vitara for a joyride with his younger brother and driven nearly one kilometre before ramming into a Honda City near a CNG pump opposite Homes 121 around 5.30 pm.The Honda City owner, Kumar Shivam, said the boy hit his car with considerable force, causing significant damage to the rear. He claimed the boy tried to flee before passersby caught him. In a video recorded after the crash, the boy’s mother is heard saying their driver had not turned up and she had sent the minor to pick up his younger brother. She added that he had not driven the car before.An FIR was filed at Sector 113 police station under BNS sections 281 (rash driving) and 324(4) (mischief). Police said they would also file a complaint against the boy’s parents and the vehicle’s owner under Section 199A of the Motor Vehicles Act, which holds guardians and owners liable when a minor commits a traffic offence. Penalties include imprisonment of up to three years, a fine of Rs 25,000 and cancellation of the vehicle’s registration for 12 months. Charges under MV Act sections 181 (driving without a licence) and 180 (allowing an unauthorised person to drive) may also follow.Police said underage driving remains rampant despite repeated awareness drives. Until July, 77 underage drivers had been challaned — 12 in Jan, 27 in Feb, five in March, nine in April, 13 in May, three in June and eight in July — in the city. Officers said many told police they had slipped away with their parents’ car keys out of fascination for driving.The incident is the latest in a series. In Feb, 23-year-old Sahil Dhaneshra died in Dwarka after an SUV allegedly driven by a minor hit his motorcycle, reportedly being driven recklessly for social media reels. Last Dec, a 17-year-old rented a Mahindra Thar online for Rs 4,000 and crashed into several two-wheelers in Noida’s Sector 24. In Oct 2025, a 16-year-old girl fatally hit a 64-year-old pedestrian in Shahbad Dairy. In Aug last year, a factory worker died after being dragged 600 metres by a car driven by a minor in Samaypur Badli.
