Gurgaon: In a day, Gurgaon police detained 105 people found consuming alcohol at public places during a special checking drive conducted across the West police zone on Sept 29. The detainees were held for four to five hours at respective police stations and were let off with a warning. Around 13 police stations participated in the drive.The drive was carried out on the directions of deputy commissioner of police (West) YVR Shashi Shekhar to strengthen crime control and security arrangements at public places. Police teams checked parks, parking areas, roadside locations and other open public places during the drive.“A total of 105 people were found consuming alcohol at public places and were taken into custody. Their activities were found to be disturbing peace and security in public places. Preventive action was initiated against all 105 people under Section 172(2) (a police officer may detain or remove any person who resists, refuses, ignores, or disregards lawful directions) of Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, ” said Sandeep Turan, police spokesperson, Gurgaon.To strengthen security arrangements and maintain law and order, police apprehended 309 for allegedly consuming alcohol in public places during a drive conducted across the city in May. The operation was carried out under directions of police commissioner Prince Sibash Kabiraj and former DCP west Karan Goyal. Police said the drive was aimed at curbing hooliganism and maintaining order in public places. They added that PCR units and special teams have also been activated to prevent any untoward incident.“We appeal to residents not to consume alcohol or engage in substance abuse at public places and urge citizens to comply with the law to avoid legal trouble.” Sandeep added.
