Youths stab woman who foiled their bid to steal bike in Ennore

Chennai: A 47-year-old woman was injured after being stabbed by a group of youths while attempting to prevent a bike theft in Ennore near Tiruvottiyur late on Saturday. Five persons, including two juveniles, were nabbed in connection with the incident.The victim, Deepa, a resident of Eraneeswarar Koil 3rd Street in Ennore,, had heard an unusual noise outside her house and rushed out. She noticed a group of youths trying to steal a motorcycle and a moped parked below her house late at night. They were also attempting to tamper with other motorbikes.When she confronted them, the youths verbally abused her. As she tried to stop them, one of the youths attacked her with a knife and fled the scene along with his accomplices, police said. Hearing her cries, neighbours rushed to the spot and attempted to search for the accused, but they managed to escape.Deepa sustained injuries to her hand and was admitted to the Tiruvottiyur govt hospital for treatment. Based on her complaint, Ennore police registered a case and launched an investigation. On Sunday, police arrested five persons in connection with the incident, including two 17-year-olds from Ernavur Tsunami Quarters and three others identified as Santhosh, 33, from Thazhankuppam, Lokeshwaran, 22, and Jayanthan,18. The accused were nabbed with the help of CCTV footage from the scene of crime.Police said the accused were under the influence of ganja and attempted to steal the bike. They were reportedly targeting unlocked vehicles to steal and make quick money. Police are trying to find out if they are involved in any other previous offences.The accused were remanded in judicial custody and the juveniles were sent to an observation home.
