New Delhi: Delhi University vice-chancellor Yogesh Singh has been reappointed for a second consecutive five-year term, becoming the first incumbent to benefit from the university’s amended reappointment provision introduced in 2023.The ministry of education, through a circular on Thursday, stated that President Droupadi Murmu, in her capacity as the visitor to the university, has approved Singh’s reappointment from Oct 8, 2026.Singh, who assumed office on Oct 8, 2021, will continue till Oct 2031, if he completes the full second term. The reappointment marks the first use of the amended Delhi University Statute 11-F(4), which was revised in Oct 2023 to allow a vice-chancellor to be reappointed for a second five-year term. Before the amendment, the university’s statute specifically barred the reappointment of an incumbent VC.The amendment originated from a proposal approved by Delhi University’s executive council in March 2014 during the tenure of then VC Dinesh Singh. The proposal was later endorsed by the university court and forwarded to the ministry of education, where it remained pending for nearly a decade before receiving the visitor’s approval in 2023.The university underwent several key changes during Singh’s first term. Among the major initiatives were the adoption of CUET for undergraduate admissions, the rollout of the four-year undergraduate programme in line with the National Education Policy (NEP), 2020, a curriculum revamp across disciplines, the creation of new academic centres, and administrative restructuring across colleges and departments. If Singh completes his second term, he will become only the second vice-chancellor in Delhi University’s history to serve for a decade, after Maurice Gwyer, who headed the university from 1938 to 1950 when there was no fixed five-year tenure for vice-chancellors. Before taking charge as the vice-chancellor at DU, Singh had a brief stint as vice-chancellor of Delhi Technological University in 2021. He moved to Delhi University before completing his tenure at DTU.Over the course of his career, he has held several key leadership positions. He served as vice-chancellor of Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda from 2011 to 2014, and later headed Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology as its director between 2014 and 2017.
