Silchar: Security agencies carried out two major anti-narcotics operations in Assam‘s Barak Valley over the weekend, seizing Yaba tablets worth an estimated Rs 6 crore and more than 10 kg of suspected cannabis in separate incidents, officials said.In the bigger haul, Assam Rifles, acting on specific intelligence from the 3 Field Intelligence Detachment (3 FID), launched a joint operation with Cachar and Hailakandi police in the Hailakandi bypass area. The team recovered 30,000 Yaba tablets, estimated to be worth around Rs 6 crore in the illicit market, and arrested Karim Uddin, 48, a resident of Rajghat in Cachar district.The seized contraband and the accused were handed over to Hailakandi police for further legal action under the NDPS Act.In a separate operation later the same night, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Govt Railway Police (GRP) arrested a 20-year-old man after allegedly recovering 10.180 kg of suspected cannabis from his trolley bag aboard the Agartala-Deoghar Weekly Express at Badarpur railway station.Railway police identified the accused as Vishal Debbarma of Hejamara under Sidhai police station in West Tripura district. He was allegedly found behaving suspiciously during a routine inspection in coach D1 of train No. 15626 and was deboarded at Platform No. 2 of Badarpur station.A search of his luggage, conducted in accordance with the NDPS Act, led to the recovery of the suspected cannabis, police said.During preliminary interrogation, Vishal allegedly told investigators that the bag was handed over to him by a man identified as Addeya Debbarma in Tripura, who promised him Rs 2,000 to deliver it to an unidentified person near Guwahati railway station. He was unable to provide further details about the intended recipient, police added.Separate cases were registered under the NDPS Act, and investigations are underway to trace the supply chain and identify others involved.Officials said the twin operations reflect intensified efforts by security forces and police agencies to crack down on narcotics trafficking in Barak Valley, which has witnessed several major drug seizures in recent years.
