Dibrugarh: The construction of the Rs 158 crore Amolapatty Junction flyover in Dibrugarh began on Saturday at South Amolapatty, with ceremonial piling carried out following traditional rituals. The 1.475-km flyover over National Highway 37 (AT Road) is designed to ease the persistent traffic bottleneck at one of the city’s most congested points. Once operational, the flyover will bypass two major intersections and a railway level crossing, reducing travel time for daily commuters who navigate through Amolapatty and the surrounding areas.Officials said the structure will be 8.45 metres wide, built across 38 spans and supported by 266 piles, along with retaining walls and utility ducts. The project is targeted for completion within 15 months.Dibrugarh has witnessed a steady rise in vehicular traffic over the years, making congestion relief a pressing civic need. The flyover is seen as a practical, long-term answer to a problem that has tested commuters and businesses alike for years.“This flyover will provide a long-term solution to traffic congestion that residents of Dibrugarh have faced for years. Once complete, it will significantly improve travel time and road safety in the city,” said a senior official associated with the project. The Amolapatty flyover is part of a broader package of four flyovers being constructed in Dibrugarh with a total outlay of over Rs 374 crore. CM Himanta Biswa Sarma laid the foundation stones for all four projects on Jan 26, 2025. The other projects include an 814-metre flyover near Doordarshan Kendra on Mancotta Road (Rs 84 crore), a 1.48-km flyover at the Lahowal-Bordubi-Tinsukia Road and NH-37 junction (Rs 72 crore), and a 651-metre flyover on the Lezai-Kalakhowa road (Rs 62 crore). Work on the Mancotta Road flyover and Lezai-Kalakhowa flyover is already underway.Together, the four flyovers aim to decongest key arterial routes and entry and exit points of the city. The projects align with the state govt’s broader push to develop Dibrugarh, designated as Assam‘s second capital into a well-connected urban centre with modern transport infrastructure.
