Ludhiana: A 26-year-old mother of four climbed a 67-m mobile-phone tower on Wednesday and refused to come down for eight hours to protest her husband’s decision to move his new partner into the family home. The high-altitude standoff at Bagga Kalan village ended safely at 2.30pm when Ladhowal police persuaded Gamgam Devi finally to climb down from the 220-foot structure, which she had ascended at 7am following a domestic dispute.Gamgam Devi married labourer Paltu Mandal, 27, six years ago. The domestic arrangement fractured a year ago when Mandal brought another married woman, Sonali, into their shared residence.Gamgam Devi alleged that her husband had remarried without a divorce and thrashed her routinely when she had objected. The last alleged assault came on Wednesday morning, which triggered her climb. The investigating officer, assistant sub-inspector Major Singh, said while Gamgam Devi had accused her husband of bigamy, an initial probe had uncovered no legal or religious evidence of a second marriage.“It appears Mandal brought the woman home to live with him without formalising a marriage,” the ASI said. “Regarding the physical assault, we will file a first-information report (FIR) when Gamgam Devi provides a formal statement. For now, we are initiating preventive legal action against both the woman and her husband.”
