Thane: A woman was killed in a hit-and-run accident near Majiwada junction in Thane on Friday evening while attempting to cross the busy Mumbai–Nashik highway. The police said that the victim, a housekeeping staff in a nearby residential complex, was on her way home to Mumbra. Initial investigations suggest she crossed to the Nashik-bound side of the eight-lane highway to find transport but misjudged the speed of oncoming traffic and was struck by a tempo. The driver fled the scene. The woman was taken to he Kalwa govt hospital but was declared dead on arrival, informed Manjusha Bhongale, senior inspector at the Kapurbawdi police station. The police have launched a probe and are likely to book the absconding driver.Residents have raised concerns over the lack of safe pedestrian crossings on the stretch, which is currently undergoing expansion. With parts of the road barricaded, locals say pedestrians are forced to take risks, warning that accidents may rise further once the highway is widened to 12 lanes.
