Woman duped of Rs 50 lakh in online investment scam

Times News NetworkChandigarh: Cyber police registered a case against unknown miscreants for duping a city-based woman of Rs 49 lakh on the pretext of online investment. The businesswoman from Sector 18, Chandigarh, said while surfing social media one day, she came across a speech by a minister, about a scheme which was “Sebi regulated.She said the scheme promised return of Rs 3 lakh on investment of Rs 21,000 by the end of the month. There was a link provided, which she opened and transferred Rs 21,000. Later, she received a call from an unknown individual, who told her that the Rs 21,000 she had deposited was only to open an account. He added that further earnings would depend on the money she deposited. He then said he would get himself added as beneficiary to her bank account and asked her to download Telegram app on her phone.In April, he contacted her and said the West Asia crisis was an opportunity to make large profit and asked her to send Rs 20 lakh, assuring that she would earn Rs 90 lakh soon. The complainant said she transferred the money. This was followed by more transactions. When the accused continued to demand more money, she realised she had been duped and approached the police.
