CHENNAI: A 25-year-old woman murdered her three-month-old daughter and later ended her life by hanging from the ceiling at her residence in Aminjikarai.The deceased mother was identified as Dharini, while her infant daughter is Shreya.Police said Dharani’s husband Praveen, 29, who runs a tattoo studio in Nungambakkam, lived with his wife, daughter Shreya, his mother Veena, 54, and his mother-in-law Radhika, 51, in a private apartment in Ayyavu Colony, Aminjikarai.On Friday, Praveen left for work as usual. Later in the evening, Radhika took her other daughter, Kavya, to a private hospital in Aminjikarai after she complained of stomach pain. At the time, Dharini, baby Shreya and Veena were at home.Later in the night, Radhika returned and, after entering the house, found Dharini hanging in her room and the infant lying unconscious on the floor with froth around her mouth. She raised an alarm, following which family members and neighbors rescued the victims and they rushed Dharini and Shreya to a private hospital, where doctors referred them to KMC Hospital. However, doctors at KMC Hospital declared them both dead on arrival.Aminjikarai police registered a case.Preliminary inquiries indicated that Dharini had been undergoing treatment for depression since childhood and that her condition had worsened after the birth of her child. Investigators are examining whether the infant died due to strangulation or poisoning and are awaiting post-mortem findings.
