Kolkata: Police have registered a fresh case against a 31-year-old woman, earlier accused of running an extortion racket by lodging false rape complaints, after she allegedly assaulted two woman constables during her arrest in Survey Park.The incident occurred on the evening of Sept 18 outside the suspect’s residence at Santoshpur, stated the complaint lodged by constable Sarmin Begum (23), posted under the DCP, East Division. Begum and her colleague, Popy Roy, were deployed to help a team, led by Panchasayar Police Station officers, to arrest the accused, Ragesree Gope, in an extortion case lodged by a doctor. When officers informed Gope of the reasons for her arrest, she allegedly resisted, hurled verbal abuse and attempted to overpower the cops. As the woman constables stepped in to escort Gope to the police vehicle, she turned violent, twisting Begum’s arm and hitting her and Roy. Gope allegedly continued to hurl abuses at police and threatened them even as she was put inside the vehicle.Bugum and Roy received treatment at Baghajatin State General Hospital before being discharged.Sub-inspector Priyanka Sarkar has been appointed as the investigating officer (IO) for the case, in which Gope has been booked for applying criminal force to deter public servants from discharging their official duty, assault, and criminal intimidation.Gope had lodged at least 11 complaints at six police stations—Golf Green, Survey Park, Regent Park, Jadavpur, Rabindra Sarobar and Kasba—over the past four years, accusing different people of rape, molestation, voluntarily causing hurt and criminal intimidation. She had lodged over four rape cases against different persons in one year.Gope’s pattern of extortion came to light after a doctor lodged a complaint against her in April, leading to an FIR against her at Panchasayar PS on the orders of the ACJM Court.
