War against obesity: Gujarat schools to display ‘sugar boards’

Ahmedabad: A board warning students about the amount of sugar in everyday food and drinks will become mandatory in schools across Gujarat.Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) has asked schools to install ‘sugar boards’ and conduct awareness programmes on healthy eating. The move follows directions from National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) to tackle the rising incidence of childhood obesity and Type 2 diabetes. The boards will include details on recommended daily sugar intake, the amount of sugar in commonly consumed foods and beverages, and the health risks associated with excessive consumption. An NCPCR study cited in the circular found that children aged 4 to 10 consume around 13% of their daily calorie intake from added sugar. Among adolescents aged 11 to 18, the proportion is about 15%, against the recommended level of around 5%.The circular said increased access to junk food, soft drinks and processed food, particularly around schools, had contributed to unhealthy dietary habits among children. Excessive sugar consumption can raise the risk of obesity, Type 2 diabetes, dental problems and other metabolic disorders.Schools have also been instructed to go beyond merely displaying the information. They will have to organise awareness programmes, seminars and workshops to educate students about the importance of limiting sugar intake and making healthier food choices. The board issued the directions after earlier advisories on the issue reportedly received inadequate response from schools.
