Silchar: The video of a woman being harassed and humiliated on a train in Assam has taken the social media by storm, with netizens condemning the atrocity and seeking justice.The victim, identified as Samsad Begum Choudhury, was travelling on the Silchar-Delhi railway route on Saturday when the incident took place.Fellow passengers, who documented the ordeal of the woman, said she had boarded the train from Silchar railway station and was en route to Dimapur. Once the train crossed Panchgram, a woman claiming to be the wife of a police officer and several men accompanying her allegedly searched the victim’s bag and started interrogating her. The user who posted the video online has identified the tormentor as Madhumita Roy Mou, who claimed to be blogger.In the video that has gone viral, the group is heard interrogating Samsad. They questioned her gender identity and asked her to prove that she was a woman. The group is seen searching her personal items and food, claiming that they believe that Samsad might be concealing illicit items.Co-passengers said Samsad is a resident of Badripar under Silchar Sadar police station. According to local sources, she has been working as a tailor in Dimapur for nearly a decade. Her father, Mohammad Ali Choudhury, is a retired police personnel.Soon after videos related to the incident surfaced online, social media users and rights activists criticised the incident and demanded strict legal action against those involved.“One woman was publicly insulted, harassed and interrogated during her journey, which is completely unacceptable. Questioning someone over personal belongings inside a train violates human dignity and privacy,” a social media user wrote while reacting to the viral clips.The user who posted the video online said Madhumita caused severe mental distress to the woman, adding that seeking social media attention could never justify humiliating another individual.Several residents expressed concern over passenger safety, stating that if such incidents are not properly investigated, commuters — especially women — may feel increasingly unsafe while travelling in public transport.No official statement had been issued by the police regarding the allegations till the filing of this report.
