Use of public funds to mark PM’s birthday irks TripuraLoP

Agartala: CPM state secretary and leader of opposition in Tripura, Jitendra Choudhury, on Thursday objected to the state govt’s decision to organise month-long ‘Sewa Sankalp’ programmes using public funds to mark PM Modi’s birthday. The state govt has announced the initiative until Oct 17, describing it as a public service and welfare outreach programme to commemorate Modi’s 25 years in public service.Seeking clarity on the source of funding, Choudhury questioned whether the state budget had made provisions for the activities, objecting to the use of govt resources and officials. He alleged that such activities could politicise state institutions and use public funds to enhance the political image of the ruling party’s central leader.Choudhury also criticised alleged delays in payment of salaries to anganwadi and scheme workers, pension-related issues affecting employees of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council and non-payment of ration money to police personnel. He said special police officers were also awaiting puja advances.
