Varanasi: A 40-year-old urologist was found dead in his hostel room at Heritage Institute of Medical Sciences (HIMS) on Saturday night, with police suspecting that he died after taking an overdose of anaesthesia. The exact cause of death will be ascertained from the postmortem and forensic reports.ACP Rohaniya Awadhesh Kumar Vishwakarma said that articles collected from Dr Shubhankar Gautam’s room hinted that he committed suicide by taking an overdose of anaesthesia. Gautam was originally from Patna, Bihar, and had been serving at the private institute for the past three years. Gautam had completed his MS and MCh from AIIMS. He got married five years ago but was living alone in Varanasi.Gautam had attended to patients in the OPD on Saturday morning and later returned to his room on the campus. When he did not turn up at the mess in the evening, fellow doctors tried calling him but received no response. They then reached his room along with a security guard. The door was locked from inside and was subsequently broken open.Gautam was found unconscious inside the room. After examination, doctors declared him dead. Further police inquiry is underway. Police are also examining a possible dispute with his wife.
