UPPCL plans 34,000 MW supply to ensure uninterrupted power during peak summer

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) claimed to finalise arrangements to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply across the state during the extreme summer months. The corporation prepared a strategy to make around 34,000 MW of power available, keeping in view the rise in demand expected between April and Sept.UPPCL managing director Pankaj Kumar said that based on past trends, peak demand in June is likely to touch nearly 33,375 MW, one of the highest levels so far. Demand in May and July is estimated to remain between 31,000 MW and 32,000 MW. To meet this requirement, all new thermal power units in the state have been made operational.Production began at major thermal projects including Ghatampur, Khurja, Panki, Obra and Jawaharpur, significantly enhancing the state’s generation capacity. The third unit of Ghatampur is scheduled to become operational by April 30, further strengthening supply.Kumar said around 80% of electricity demand during peak hours would be met through long-term MOUs already in place. “Additional requirements will be sourced through power exchanges. The corporation has also arranged approximately 4,663 million units (MU) of electricity under banking agreements with various states, enabling power to be procured when needed and returned later,” he said.He said efforts were underway to strengthen the transmission and distribution network to minimise outages caused by technical faults. “The corporation is focusing on ensuring uniform power supply in rural and urban areas, increasing feeder-level monitoring, reducing line losses through special drives and accelerating the rollout of smart meters and digital monitoring systems,” he said.
