LUCKNOW: At least 56 people lost their lives and 46 others were injured as non-stop rainfall battered large parts of Uttar Pradesh between Sept 25 and 26, causing widespread destruction across the state.The state also recorded the deaths of 107 animals, while damage to crops was still being assessed.According to a situation report prepared by UP Relief Commissioner Hrishikesh Bhaskar Yashod’s office, Sitapur was identified as the worst affected district in terms of fatalities, reporting seven deaths. Lakhimpur Kheri, Bahraich and Balrampur recorded five deaths each, while Ayodhya and Gorakhpur reported four fatalities each.Among the injured, Hardoi reported the highest number with seven people hurt, followed by Mainpuri and Shravasti with five each. Barabanki reported four injuries, while Sitapur and Lakhimpur Kheri recorded three injured persons each.The heavy rainfall also caused significant livestock losses. A total of 107 animal deaths were reported across the state, with Hardoi accounting for the highest number at 28, followed by Sitapur (16), Kannauj (14), Bahraich (7), Kanpur Dehat (7) and Unnao (6).Property damage was extensive, with 1,021 houses reported damaged. Hardoi alone accounted for 272 damaged houses, while Sitapur recorded 108. Chandauli, Auraiya, Gonda, Hamirpur, Shahjahanpur and Bahraich also reported substantial damage to residential structures.The report noted that Uttar Pradesh received an average of 66.5 mm rainfall during the 48 hour period against the normal 7.6 mm, representing a 775% excess.Out of the state’s 75 districts, 56 recorded “large excess” rainfall. Farrukhabad registered the highest rainfall deviation at 7,385% above normal, followed by Kannauj (5,664%), Shahjahanpur (4,408%), Hamirpur (4,240%) and Mahoba (4,100%).Yashod said, “Assessment of crop losses was still underway as district administrations continued rescue, relief and damage assessment operations in the affected areas.”
