Lucknow: Biennial elections to 11 seats of the Uttar Pradesh legislative council from graduates’ and teachers’ constituencies will be held on Oct 23, with counting scheduled for Oct 27, chief electoral officer’s office said on Tuesday.The elections will cover five graduates’ constituencies and six teachers’ constituencies. The terms of the sitting members from these seats are due to expire on Dec 6.According to chief electoral officer Navdeep Rinwa, the notification will be issued on Sept 29. Candidates can file nominations until Oct 6, while scrutiny will take place on Oct 7. The last date for withdrawal of candidature is Oct 9.Polling will be held from 8 am to 4 pm on Oct 23. Votes will be counted on Oct 27 and the entire election process is scheduled to be completed before Oct 31.The five graduates’ constituencies going to polls are Lucknow, Varanasi, Agra, Meerut and Allahabad-Jhansi. The six teachers’ constituencies are Lucknow, Varanasi, Agra, Meerut, Bareilly-Moradabad and Gorakhpur-Faizabad.The retiring members include Avanish Kumar Singh, Ashutosh Sinha, Manvendra Pratap Singh, Dinesh Kumar Goel and Man Singh Yadav from the graduates’ constituencies, and Umesh Dwivedi, Lal Bihari Yadav, Akash Agarwal, Shrichand Sharma, Hari Singh Dhillon and Dhruv Kumar Tripathi from the teachers’ constituencies.The model code of conduct has come into force in all districts of Uttar Pradesh except Kanpur Nagar, Kanpur Dehat and Unnao, CEO said.Unlike assembly elections, only electors registered on the separate electoral rolls for the respective graduates’ or teachers’ constituencies can vote in these elections.
