LUCKNOW: Ending a nearly three-year gap, the Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday appointed 1995-batch IPS officer Amrendra Kumar Sengar as the state’s new Director General (Intelligence). Sengar, who recently became the longest-serving Police Commissioner of Lucknow, has also been given the additional charge of Director General, Security Headquarters.Sengar’s elevation comes after an eventful tenure as Lucknow Police Commissioner, during which he played a pivotal role in consolidating the Commissionerate system of policing in the state capital. Under his leadership, the Commissionerate structure was strengthened through administrative reforms, technology-driven policing and improved coordination among field units.He is also credited with spearheading several initiatives aimed at improving traffic management in Lucknow, introducing data-driven enforcement and congestion mitigation measures. Another key focus of his tenure was strengthening public outreach by creating a more robust public-police grievance redressal mechanism, enabling quicker disposal of complaints and greater citizen engagement.A highly decorated officer, Sengar brings extensive experience from both state policing and central deputation. During his 14-year stint with the Government of India, he held several prestigious assignments in the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs).One of the defining chapters of his career came in 2004, when he served as a War Crimes Investigator with the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK), contributing to investigations under the UN peacekeeping mission.He later served in the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), besides working as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to the Union Home Minister between 2017 and 2019.In Uttar Pradesh, Sengar has held charge as Superintendent of Police in districts including Muzaffarnagar, Hardoi, Jhansi and Chitrakoot, besides serving as Inspector General (Law and Order), where he supervised policing and security across the state.His distinguished service has earned him several accolades, including the President’s Police Medal, which he received in 2021 for his outstanding contribution during his tenure with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).With his appointment as Director General (Intelligence), Sengar returns to one of the most crucial positions in the Uttar Pradesh Police at a time when the state faces evolving challenges related to organised crime, cyber threats, terrorism, intelligence gathering and internal security. His additional charge as DG, Security Headquarters will also place him at the helm of security planning for VVIPs, strategic installations and other sensitive establishments across the state.
