Dimapur: Union health and family welfare minister JP Nadda, accompanied by Assam health and family welfare minister Ashok Singhal and Nagaland Rajya Sabha MP Phangnon Konyak, visited landslide-affected areas in Mon town on Wednesday to assess the situation.Nadda inspected affected locations in Defence Colony and adjoining areas in Techa ward, where eight people reportedly died in the landslides.He also interacted with affected families at the Konyak Union office and expressed solidarity, calling the incident disheartening and painful.Nadda said the govt of India would provide all possible support for relief and restoration, and that a central team would visit to assist ongoing operations.Mon deputy commissioner Wennyei Konyak briefed Nadda on the situation, stating that incessant heavy rainfall triggered floods and landslides at several locations, damaging roads, bridges and other public infrastructure.Rendemo Shitio, assistant manager (response and communication) at the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority and nodal officer (disaster management) of the Mon District Disaster Management Authority, said in a presentation that monsoon rainfall on July 19 and 20 triggered catastrophic landslides and flash floods across Mon district, causing loss of life, destruction of homes and agricultural land, and complete blockage of key arterial routes.He said the district recorded 83.95 mm of rainfall on July 19, while cumulative rainfall from July 19 to 31 stood at 341 mm.
