Pune: A two-year-old boy died after he fell into a water-filled pit near his house at Kadamvak Vasti in Loni Kalbhor around 10am on Tuesday. The boy was identified as Soham Lakhan Kasbe. His parents are daily-wage workers. The boy’s mother, Shilpa Kasbe (23), has lodged a complaint with the Loni Kalbhor police against the contractor who had dug up the pit.Senior inspector Pradip Pawar of Loni Kalbhor police station told TOI, “He was playing in front of his house while his parents and other family members were busy in household chores. The boy accidentally fell into the pit and drowned.”The pit, he said, was around 3 feet deep. Pawar said, “A local contractor dug the pit in front of the house for stormwater drainage work. The members of the colony had given the contract to the contractor. There was no written contract or work order for the work.”“The contractor did not take adequate safety measures, which resulted in the death of the boy,” he said.Last year, the rainwater flooded several houses in the locality during the monsoon. The work was to avert a flood situation this time. “There was no rainfall in the area, but the wastewater from the different houses had filled the pit,” he said.
