Pune: Two women, including a former sarpanch, were found murdered while sleeping in their house in Sherechiwadi in Baramati on Tuesday morning.“Prima facie, robbery appears to be the motive behind the murders. Their jewellery was missing. However, nothing else was stolen from the house,” assistant police inspector Shashikant Shelke of Supa police station told TOI.The police identified the deceased as former sarpanch Indumati Ladkat (75) and her relative Krishnabai Ladkat (55), residents of Sherechiwadi.Shelke said after attending a village programme on Monday they went to Indumati’s house. They locked the house from the outside and slept in the front verandah at night. “The women used to sleep at each other’s houses for company. Indumati’s two sons live in other cities, while Krishnabai’s son lives separately in the same village,” Shelke said.“Around 7 am, when Krishnabai’s granddaughter came looking for her, she found their blood-soaked bodies and alerted villagers,” he added.Shelke said police reached the spot and found that the women’s throats had been slit with a sharp weapon. Their gold jewellery was missing. “We checked the house and found that nothing had been stolen from the cupboards,” Shelke said.Police have registered a case under Section 103 (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). “We are working on some clues,” he said.
